HIS WORK

The different techniques he uses are drawing, carving and painting.
Sometimes he asks other craftsmen to intervene in his artistic quest (cameramen for video, workers to make the supports for his large size projects)
The " finish " of his works must be perfect: the relationship between the volumes and the intimate link between his work and its frame

HIS PHILOSOPHY

He doesn't define his art but expects to find his place in today's art.
He doesn't deliver any message but he wants to question, to tease, to move and to shock. According to him it's important to show his work to the public because it's the major goal of art " Art in an ivory tower isn' interesting " he says. During the day he practices his art and in the evening he teaches at the " Academie of Verviers " to make a living.
The role of an artist in society, creating, isn't always recognized by a majority of people.

ARTWORK

The work presented here is " Les Hautes Fagnes " (The High Fens) by Michel Barzin. It shows soberly the area where he lives (The Ardennes).
Michel Barzin's work consists in 7 pictures showing the Fens at different moments of the year. The Fens are a theme which is often worked by artists living in the Ardennes. M. Barzin has been able to translate it differently : neither oil painting mor classical and ordinary landscapes. He prefers serigraphy giving rhythm and energy to the picture through simplified shapes.
In drawing th Fens he has tried to innovate and it's why he underlines his works with a golden edge and will transmit his vision of things.
We've chosen to analyse two works in this group.
He is our presentation of work 2
This picture gives an impression of quietness due to its simplicity, its sobriety, its symetry.
The shapes, very simple, are seen through the lines and the volumes.
The surfaces are animated. The valeur and repartition of the proportions chosen give a feeling of distance (atmospharie values).
In this serigraphy representing reddening Fens in Fall, with a barren fir true and 3 little insolent black clouds, M. Barzin reveals the extent of his talent with that touch of irony and humour which are so typical.
And last but not least: the analysis of work 3
This work reveals an extreme sobriety of colours: decreasing blue and green translate the depth and the vastness of the Fens. And as usual a touch of humour with the traditional golden edge.
We have always enjoyed his style and his humour. He has been able to renew in a very personal way a theme often treated very academically.
