Artistic process

Before being a drawer, an engraver and sculptor, David Pirotte is a paintor. He handles traditional materials in painting such as acrylic, canvas on frames, brushes, scrubbers.
He creates strong images composed of visions of a new expressionism.
In this raw universe, we can perceive his intention to explore the paths of a world situated between phantasm and reality and as he says it, to reach beauty by also representing, real life, daily life.
He keeps close to a cetain musical circle(Rock and Punk) and doesn't hesitate to let himself be influenced by a title or a melody.
He appreciates Pop Art ( Andy Warhol, K. Harring) and German expressionnist artists (Beselitz)
He particulary appreciates J.M.Basquiat's work.

Extract from a text of L. H. in "La Meuse" December 1998

David Pirotte
Sex, lies, but not video.
Small and big violences of our ordinary life are told to us through David Pirotte's paitings, engravings and drawings.
His work is stong, narrative and it bursts out in black and white as well as in colours.
Little pieces of a society bound to drugs, prostitution, money…
David Pirotte expresses them more than he describes them.
Crawling world bound to the surface that the artiste has given it.
Cut up universe which hesitates between bad dreams and true reality.
Is that this life that we have? At first we don't believe it.
The artist has even taken car to give his drawing look of a comic strip.
But the power of evocation is here and the hybrid beings directly inspired by J.Bosch can't change anything to this.
Even though it's discreetly inserted in David Pirotte phantasmagoric, all his work is about our daily life.
